General Meeting of GARD

Jul 1st, 2011

On 23-24 September 2011 in Warsaw will be held the General Meeting of the Global Alliance against Respiratory Diseases (GARD). GARD is a response of World Health Organization (WHO) on the growing problem of respiratory diseases.

GARD was established in 2006 by cooperation of the institutions and organizations in the sphere of the wider fight against respiratory diseases - one of the founding members of GARD is the Polish Society of Allergology. The purpose of this organization is to develop a strategy to prevent respiratory diseases that can be used in every country.

One of the initiatives that the Polish Society of Allergology organized in cooperation with GARD is the General Meeting of GARD with representatives of European Union countries, representatives of the European Commission and the national offices of WHO. Polish Society of Allergology will host this prestigious Conference. Its purpose is to present and discuss the problem of chronic respiratory diseases, present the program of treatment of chronic respiratory diseases, discuss the adaptation and implementation of this program in the European Union. During the Conference will be presented national programs and initiatives dedicated to the fight against chronic respiratory diseases (ECAP and the GATS, POLASTMA program and other achievements). One of the objectives of the Conference will be to develop an official document which will be presented at meetings of the Public Health Working Group in the period of Poland's presidency of the EU Council.

PTA wants also to create a platform for international cooperation with EU countries to implement programs devoted to early diagnostic, prevention and monitoring of non-inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system, using GARD plan for national health policies. The conference will serve as a tool to find and implement the most effective treatments for chronic respiratory diseases.

GARD Conference is affiliated with the conference devoted to the Polish presidency of respiratory diseases, which takes place on 21-22 September 2011. With this arrangement of terms can be present achievements of the Polish presidency on the global forum. This is all the more important that it will promote Polish achievements while pursuing the practice adopted in the direction of cooperation between EU member states and the WHO.

Current challenges in the fight against chronic respiratory diseases need for joint international action to reduce the negative - health, social and economic - the impact of these diseases. Very important is the fact that by such conferences is increasing the role and importance of Polish as a leader and coordinator of these activities.

EAACI/UEMS Knowledge Examination in Allergology and Clinical Immunology 2011

April 4th, 2011

On 5 June 2010, the 3rd European Examination in Allergology and Clinical Immunology took place in London. 52 candidates applied for the Exam and finally 43 candidates from 23 European and non-European countries took the examination. The examination was based on revised questions from a question pool and on many new questions prepared by the EAACI Task Force members and by different European centers. The majority of questions (ca. 70%) covered topics of allergology such as: allergens, dermatological, respiratory and pediatric allergy, anaphylaxis, venom hypersensitivity, drug and food hypersensitivity, but also issues like pregnancy and allergology, occupational allergies, eosinophilic disorders, mastocytosis, or CI-INH deficiency.

The examination also comprised some questions about basic immunology and clinical immunology (autoimmunity and immune deficiency). The questions were carefully evaluated by the EAACI Exam/Knowledge Test Task Force, together with a specialised, professional institution (Institute for Medical Teaching, IML, Bern).

The Knowledge Examination in Allergology and Clinical Immunology takes place every year during the EAACI Congress, on Saturday at 11:00. The candidates have 3 hours to answer about 100 questions. Although this test does not replace or substitute the currently existing national examinations, that are regularly held by national bodies, our view is that this examination will help to further increase the standard of Allergology/Clinical Immunology in Europe, and facilitate exchange of young people trained in this field. Furthermore, EAACI members have the opportunity to use this Knowledge Test as a tool for self-evaluation.

The current program of the conference includes 6 plenary sessions, 17 symposiums, 24 courses and poster sessions, addressing practically every aspect of diagnostics and treatment of asthma and concurrent diseases. It is worth mentioning that Prof. Marek L. Kowalski – the President of the Polish Society of Allergology in 2003-2006 and a member of WAO board, is among the lecturers invited to the WAO Conference.

Another hope for patients with asthma

October 26th, 2010

As soon as in one week, on 3rd 6th November, 2010 the 20th World Congress of Asthma (WCA) will be held. The Congress, devoted only and exclusively to asthma-related topics, is held every 3 years and this year will be hosted by Athens.

The World Congress of Asthma is an initiative of INTERASMA, an organization uniting various medical disciplines contributing to diagnostics and treatment of asthma. INTERASMA has been active for over 50 years, which makes it one of the oldest medical organizations involved in counteracting asthma. The first World Congress of Asthma was organized in 1957 in Lubeck and has been a periodic meeting of experts in this field since that time.

The topic of the Jubilee Congress will be the problem of misdiagnosing asthma, which is still present. Unfortunately, failures to diagnose asthma, or treating it as another disease, occur quiet frequently and deteriorate the patients’ condition despite the availability of drugs and procedures allowing to control even the most severe forms of asthma. The program of the Congress includes also such problems as asthma in children and elderly patients, asthma and pregnancy, or occupational asthma.

The Congresses of WCA provide also an excellent opportunity to present the national educational programs associated with the prevention of asthma. The aim of INTERASMA is to support such programs and to establish cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organizations, e.g. such as the POLASTMA National Program for Early Diagnostics and Treatment of Asthma, which is the most important Polish initiative addressed to the medical community and patients suffering from asthma.

We invite everyone who is interested in taking part in the World Congress of Asthma, as well as in the activities of INTERASMA, to visit the Congress website –http://www.wca2010.gr.

GARD vs. respiratory tract disorders

October 4th, 2010

Hundreds of millions of people all over the world suffer from respiratory disorders – including 300 million patients with asthma and 210 million patients chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). According to the estimates of 2005, 3 million people died because of COPD, and 250 000 because of asthma. By 2030, COPD is expected to become the third leading cause of mortality in the world.

GARD (Global Alliance against chronic Respiratory Diseases) has been a response of the World Health Organization (WHO) to the increasing problem of respiratory disorders. GARD was founded in 2006 as an association of institutions and organizations involved in counteracting diseases of the respiratory tract. The aim of GARD is to develop strategies for prevention of respiratory diseases, which would be applicable in any country.

One of the initiatives realized by the Polish Society of Allergology in cooperation with GARD is an international Conference, in which the representatives of all European Union member states, European Commission and WHO will participate. The aim of the Conference, planned for October 2011, is to present and discuss the problem of chronic respiratory diseases, present the program of GARD, taking into consideration the role of family doctors in treatment of chronic respiratory diseases and discuss its modifications and implementation in EU countries. The national programs and initiatives addressing the problem of fighting chronic respiratory diseases (The ECAP and GATS studies, the POLASTMA Program and other achievements, e.g. associated with actions against nicotinism) will also be presented during the Conference. The main objective of the Conference will be to formulate a document, which will be presented at the sessions of the Public Health Working Group during the Polish presidency in the European Union Council.

PTA also strives to establish a cooperation platform which would allow undertaking joint activities aimed at implementation of programs for early detection, prevention and monitoring of non-inflammatory respiratory diseases by the Ministers of Health of EU member states, to incorporate the GARD plan in the national health care policies. The Conference is intended to serve as a tool allowing to search for and to implement the most effective methods of treatment of chronic respiratory diseases.

It is noteworthy that the POLASTMA Program has become a part of the structures and initiatives of GARD. Admission to GARD was one of the objectives of the POLASTMA Program creators, because it contributes to international renown of the Program and allows to coordinate its activities within the global efforts to counteract the progress of respiratory diseases.
